Sanders Campaigns With Gubernatorial Candidate Amanda Janoo in Winooski

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders made a rare foray into Vermont's gubernatorial politics on October 22, campaigning alongside Democratic candidate Amanda Janoo outside the Community Health Centers in Winooski. It was the first time Sanders has publicly campaigned with Janoo since endorsing her on October 7. Sanders, who has been traveling the country supporting progressive candidates, said his support was rooted in Janoo's progressive agenda, particularly her proposal for publicly funded primary health care. He described this year's balloting as 'the most important midterm election in the history of the United States.'

Unlike Sanders' Medicare for All proposal, which would cover virtually all medical care, Janoo's plan would initially cover only primary and preventive services such as routine checkups and screenings, with Vermonters still needing insurance for hospital stays and surgeries; the state would pay participating primary care providers directly. Janoo has estimated the plan would cost at least $320 million annually and suggested raising taxes on wealthy Vermonters could raise roughly $260 million a year. Sanders said the plan would make Vermont a national model for expanding access to health care. Vermonters pay some of the highest health insurance premiums in the country: the state's lowest-cost bronze plans averaged more than twice the national price in 2025, according to the VT Healthcare 911 coalition. Janoo faces incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott in the November 3 election.
