South Carolina Governor Signs Executive Order Creating Governor's Conservation Commission: Goal of 7 Million More Acres Protected by 2050
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed an executive order on October 22 creating a Governor's Conservation Commission to strengthen protection of the state's wildlife, historic sites and natural resources. According to the governor's office, South Carolina has preserved 3.4 million acres of land, 400,000 of them added since 2017, and the governor hopes to see at least 10 million acres preserved. Under the South Carolina Protected Lands and Conservation Coordination Act of 2026, the state's goal is to preserve an additional 7 million acres by 2050.
The commission will include up to 26 members, all appointed by the governor. It is designed to strengthen collaboration among state agencies, local governments, citizens and private landowners, advise the executive branch on conservation strategies, increase public awareness and identify possible funding sources. 'South Carolina's natural beauty and rich history are an important part of what makes our state unique,' McMaster said in a statement. 'As our state continues to prosper, we must be thoughtful and think broadly about how we preserve the land, historic sites, and cultural heritage that define South Carolina.' He added that economic, academic and conservation efforts each depend on the other, and that the commission 'will help bring people together to strengthen our conservation efforts and protect these resources for future generations.'
