Oregon Officials Defend Election Security at Woodburn Town Hall: Voters Urged to Use Drop Boxes
Elected Oregon officials defended the state's election safeguards at a town hall at Woodburn High School on the evening of October 21, amid concerns about federal intervention and misinformation ahead of the November 3 election. U.S. Rep. Andrea Salinas, Secretary of State Tobias Read and Marion County Clerk Bill Burgess urged voters to return ballots through official drop boxes and described multiple protections, including ballot-tracking services expanded to all Oregon counties and public testing of vote-counting equipment.
Read said ballots have been sent to voters statewide and anyone who has not received one should contact their county elections office. Voters who must mail ballots were urged to do so by October 27. Ballots must be postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, or returned to an official drop box.
Burgess said about 87% of ballots processed so far in Marion County came through drop sites, compared with about 5% by mail. The state is adding nearly 20 drop boxes to its existing network of more than 300, including two in Marion County, one a 24-hour outdoor box at the county courthouse. Read received $1.25 million in September for additional ballot boxes and expansion of the ballot-tracking system. "Oregon's elections are safe, secure, accurate and fair," Salinas said.
