San Jose Drafts Uniform Standards for Data Centers: 100 Percent Clean Power and No Drinking Water for Cooling Proposed
SAN JOSE, California — The City of San Jose, in Santa Clara County, California, released a draft set of 'Uniform Standards' for data centers and other large energy users on October 9, a 16-point framework Mayor Matt Mahan has described as among the strictest in the country. The draft would require data centers to run on 100 percent clean or carbon-neutral power, bar the use of drinking water for cooling, limit backup generators and require environmental monitoring.
Related fee proposals include an affordable-housing linkage fee estimated at $4 to $5 per square foot and a one-time energy reliability fee of about $50,000 per megawatt. The city held a series of community meetings on the draft, with the final scheduled session on October 15; the standards then go to the Planning Commission next month, with a City Council vote expected in December. 'As the capital of Silicon Valley, San José is leading the nation in regulating the development of infrastructure that powers SI, the internet and our increasingly digital world,' Mahan said in the city's release.
