Follow-Up: DHS Issues Statement on Incendiary Device Thrown at ICE Facility in Atlanta: Device Caught on Fence, Suspect Fled on Foot

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a statement on Oct. 22 about an incendiary device thrown at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Atlanta. According to the statement, on the evening of Oct. 20 a male suspect threw an improvised incendiary device toward the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Field Office in Atlanta, in Fulton County, Georgia. The device did not reach the facility, as it became caught on the top of the perimeter fence.

In the statement, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the attack was part of an escalation of violence against ICE personnel, saying ICE officers are facing a more than 1,600% increase in assaults. He said assaults on officers and facilities will not be tolerated and that anyone who targets federal law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

DHS said the incident took place at approximately 9:00 p.m., when the suspect threw a bottle later identified as an improvised incendiary device. An Atlanta Police Department (APD) officer in the immediate vicinity observed the incident and chased the suspect on foot, but the suspect fled the scene. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and APD are actively investigating the incident.

GSM reported the incident on Oct. 21: the FBI's Atlanta field office said at the time that no one was injured and there was no major damage, and that no suspect or motive had been announced and no one had been arrested. The DHS statement on Oct. 22 did not release a suspect identity or any arrest information.
