Panama City, Panama — President José Raúl Mulino met on October 20 with U.S. Ambassador Kevin Cabrera and Hideki "Kit" Miyamoto, founder of the structural engineering firm Miyamoto International. The United States announced an additional $1 million in humanitarian assistance, bringing total U.S. support for the earthquake response to $6 million, with $1 million directed to Miyamoto International's structural assessment work.

Miyamoto said Panama's government damage assessment had exceeded international norms: the authorities assessed nearly all affected infrastructure within the first ten days after the quake, compared with a typical international timeframe of about two weeks. His teams are touring the central provinces of Veraguas, Herrera, Coclé and Los Santos, inspecting priority buildings and structures.

Mulino thanked the United States for its support and said the recovery focus is on rebuilding homes, schools, churches, hospitals, roads and historic buildings. Panama was struck by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on October 9 that damaged buildings and caused casualties, with damage tallies still being updated.
