University of Michigan-Led Consortium Wins Up to $52 Million in NIH Funding: Study Will Follow 1,500 Infants to Learn Why Respiratory Infections Affect Children Differently
Michigan Medicine announced on October 20 that a multicenter research consortium led by the University of Michigan has been approved for up to $52 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study why viral lower respiratory tract infections affect young children so differently — why some recover fully while others develop severe illness or lasting problems such as asthma.
The study will enroll 1,500 children ages 0 to 24 months who are hospitalized with viral lower respiratory tract infections, including bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome, and follow them through at least ages four to five. It will combine detailed clinical assessments with lung function testing, imaging, environmental exposure measurements, activity and sleep monitoring, and advanced molecular analyses.
"Right now, when a young child is hospitalized with a viral respiratory infection, we have very limited ability to predict what their trajectory will be," said principal investigator Dr. Peter Mourani, professor and associate chair of research in the Department of Pediatrics and division director of pediatric critical care medicine at U-M Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The study is designed to identify which children recover completely, which have repeated problems with later infections, and which go on to persistent respiratory disease — and when and how clinicians might intervene.
