Follow-Up: Targeted Curfews Helped Keep the Peace Overnight in France, PM Says
Targeted curfews imposed in parts of Paris and other French cities helped keep the peace overnight on Monday, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said on Tuesday, according to Reuters. He added that local authorities will be able to impose targeted curfews again on Tuesday night where they deem necessary. Paris police had ordered a curfew from 11 p.m. on Monday to 6 a.m. on Tuesday around the Place de la République, where rioting broke out on Saturday, and the Les Halles shopping district, which was hit by looting, and banned gatherings and demonstrations in the areas from 8 p.m., saying the measures aimed to protect people and property. In northern France, Lille, Douai, Wattignies and Denain imposed an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew for minors for two days, Nice imposed an overnight curfew for minors in its centre, and Marseille banned gatherings and demonstrations. The weekend protests, driven by anger over the cost of living and underfunded public services, descended into some of the worst rioting in France in years: about 2,400 people were arrested, more than 3,000 shops were pillaged or damaged, and Limoges town hall was torched, according to the government. The government said it is putting in place state-financed furlough measures to help employers avoid layoffs and funds to help companies meet immediate cashflow needs, and will increase police numbers ahead of possible renewed protests next weekend. Lecornu has ruled out a full curfew on the whole of Paris, while saying a state of emergency could be declared if deemed necessary. Some protesters have called for new demonstrations on Saturday, October 24, and unions have called strikes for November 5.
