George Washington Bridge Upper Level to New Jersey Closed: Driver's Suspected Gunshot Wound Leads to Crash
The New Jersey-bound upper-level lanes of the George Washington Bridge were closed on Tuesday evening after a shooting incident, NorthJersey.com reported Tuesday night. A Port Authority Police Department spokesperson said that at about 7:05 p.m., officers responding to a single-vehicle crash on the upper level found the driver with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
The driver was rushed to Englewood Hospital; there were no other injuries, and the incident remains under investigation. Just before 9 p.m., the bridge's official X account posted: "The GWB Upper to NJ has all lanes remaining temporarily blocked due to police activity.
Seek alternate route." The report described a still-developing incident, and police have not released further details. The George Washington Bridge is one of the busiest Hudson River crossings between Manhattan and New Jersey, and an evening rush-hour closure was expected to significantly affect commuters; drivers were advised to use alternatives such as the Lincoln Tunnel or Holland Tunnel.
