Malibu Declares Local Emergency Ahead of Strong El Niño; Preparedness Workshop Set for Oct. 27
Malibu is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The Malibu City Council on Sept. 28 declared a citywide local emergency over the threat of extreme weather from the forecasted 2026-2027 strong El Niño, including flooding, mudslides, landslides, debris flows, coastal erosion and coastal flooding, the city said in a notice posted Oct. 13. Malibu, in Los Angeles County, California, will hold an El Niño preparedness workshop at City Hall at 4 p.m. on Oct. 27. Mayor Bruce Silverstein said Malibu has been severely affected by powerful storms, including El Niño years, and the city is acting now to be prepared. The city said the preventive declaration, based on conditions of extreme peril, lets it respond without delay, coordinate with county, state and federal agencies, and obtain response and recovery resources; it remains in effect until terminated by the council, which must review the need to continue it at least every 60 days. The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center advised on Sept. 10 that El Niño is strengthening, with a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong event this fall and winter and a 75 percent chance of a historic event exceeding any previous El Niño dating back to 1950.
