Dallas: Tarrant County Cuts 92 Election Day Polling Sites; Leaders Urge Early Voting, Launch Free Rides
Dallas — In Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, Tarrant County Commissioner Alisa Simmons, Fort Worth Council Member Deborah Peoples and the community organization Hola Texas held a press conference at 2 p.m. on October 20 at the Hazel Harvey Peace Center in Fort Worth to explain the impact of polling place cuts and launch a free rides-to-the-polls effort. Voters needing a ride can call 817-987-3851; Spanish-speaking voters can call 817-523-8211.
In September, the Tarrant County Commissioners Court voted 3-2 to cut Election Day polling sites from 316 in the 2022 midterms to 224, a reduction of 92; early voting sites were also trimmed from 50 to 47. Simmons voted against the cuts. Peoples is one of four plaintiffs suing to restore the sites, alleging the cuts violate Texas law and disproportionately harm Black and Latino voters. On October 13, a district judge denied the request to restore the locations before Election Day, though the underlying lawsuit remains pending.
County Judge Tim O'Hare backed the new plan, saying the number of sites still exceeds the state's mandatory minimum. Early voting in Texas runs October 19-30, with Election Day on November 3. (GSM, based on the Hola Texas advisory and Fort Worth Report coverage)
