美古外交官在联合国交锋：美方活动邀古巴异见人士出席 古巴代表离场时高声斥责

US and Cuba Trade Barbs at UN Ahead of Annual Embargo Vote
New York — The United States and Cuba traded accusations at the United Nations on October 19, according to Reuters, after US diplomats hosted an event featuring Cuban dissidents and recently released former political prisoners. Cuban ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán and other representatives yelled at US ambassador Mike Waltz as he left the event at the UN building, which focused on allegations of human rights abuses by the Cuban government.
Waltz told reporters in New York that Cuban embassy diplomats had harassed, yelled at, intimidated and filmed the former political prisoners and other participants. He said the Cuban regime uses its annual General Assembly resolution to propagate a lie, and that the US mission was exposing those claims. The confrontation comes ahead of next week's annual UN vote on a resolution calling for an end to the US embargo on the island, expected on October 27-28.
The non-binding resolution has passed the General Assembly by wide margins every year since 1992, but only the US Congress can lift the more than 60-year-old trade embargo. The Trump administration has been stepping up pressure on Cuba, including an oil blockade. Cuba has blamed US sanctions for the worst economic downturn in decades, marked by shortages, collapsing infrastructure and runaway inflation. (GSM reporting based on Reuters)
