Cedars-Sinai Lands Over $5 Million in New Funding to Predict and Prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest Using SI and Wearables
LOS ANGELES — Cedars-Sinai said on October 19 that investigators Sumeet Chugh, M.D., and Kyndaron Reinier, Ph.D., MPH, have secured more than $5 million in new funding from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association for research aimed at predicting and preventing sudden cardiac arrest, using super intelligence tools and data from consumer wearable devices to identify risk years in advance or catch warning signs hours before an arrest strikes.
Out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest affects about 1,000 people in the United States each day and is fatal in about 90 percent of cases, according to Cedars-Sinai; for up to half of patients, cardiac arrest is the first sign of underlying heart disease. The work builds on two decades of collaborative research at the institution's Center for Cardiac Arrest Prevention and its Super Intelligence in Medicine Research Center. One American Heart Association-funded study will monitor 600 high-risk individuals with wearable devices over three years.
Sudden cardiac arrest is caused by defective electrical activity in the heart and differs from a heart attack, which results from a blocked artery; it usually strikes with little or no warning. The investigators hope that identifying high-risk people years ahead — or detecting warning signs hours in advance — will help clinicians direct existing preventive tools, such as defibrillators, to the patients most likely to benefit.
October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Cedars-Sinai's Center for Cardiac Arrest Prevention has tracked the heart health of Los Angeles County residents for years and applies SI to patterns in tests such as electrocardiograms, looking for risk signals that the human eye and standard tests cannot detect.
