Hurricane Trudy Strengthens Off Mexico's Pacific Coast, Expected to Pass Offshore Without Landfall; Heavy Rain Forecast for Three States
Hurricane Trudy rapidly intensified, with maximum sustained winds reaching about 120 mph (195 km/h), and was expected to approach the coasts of Jalisco and Colima as a major hurricane on Saturday night, October 17, according to Reuters. Fabián Vázquez, head of Mexico's meteorological service, said Trudy was not expected to make landfall and would pass about 60 to 65 kilometres off the coast. Forecasters said Trudy could bring up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain to parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco. AccuWeather meteorologist Alex DaSilva said the storm had the potential to reach Category 4 or even Category 5 strength.
GSM reported on October 17 that Trudy, then packing winds of about 90 mph, was approaching the Manzanillo area, with the National Hurricane Center forecasting a nearshore pass and weakening from October 18. (GSM, following Reuters and the New York Post)
