Follow-Up: France Protest Toll Revised Up — Over 2,000 Arrested, 600+ Officers and Firefighters Injured, Two Dead; Macron to Address the Nation Tonight

PARIS — French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez on Sunday (October 18) released updated nationwide figures for the October 17 protest day: more than 2,000 people have been arrested across France, and more than 600 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters have been injured. The toll was revised up again from figures released earlier on Sunday of about 1,800 arrests and more than 500 injured.

Two people died in the unrest. According to the Paris Police headquarters, via BFMTV, one protester died after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest just north of Paris. Nuñez said a 22-year-old police officer in the western city of Nantes died after being struck by a third-party vehicle.

Nuñez said peaceful protest is a fundamental right, but violence and coordinated attacks on public buildings and security forces are unacceptable, and investigations are under way to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. According to the Interior Ministry, hundreds of businesses were damaged or looted, and public buildings were targeted in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Rennes, Strasbourg, Nice and other cities.

The Élysée announced that President Emmanuel Macron will address the nation in a television broadcast at 8 p.m. Paris time on Sunday (11 a.m. Pacific). Separately, BFMTV reported that Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is set to meet the mayors of Paris, Lyon and Marseille, who have called for greater reinforcement to repair the damage.

The protests were among the most violent France has seen in years. On the October 17 nationwide protest day, the Interior Ministry estimated about 550,000 people took to the streets (organizers put the figure at about 800,000), rallying over the high cost of living and underfunded public services. As night fell, clashes erupted in multiple cities, and the 143-year-old town hall in Limoges was set ablaze.
