CPUC Redraws High Fire-Threat Map: 47 SCE Areas Added, 61 Proposed Removals Denied
SACRAMENTO — At its October 8 voting meeting in Sacramento, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) adopted Decision D.26-10-003, partially granting Southern California Edison's petition to modify the boundaries of the High Fire-Threat District in its service territory: SCE's proposed addition of 47 areas was approved, while its proposed removal of 61 areas was denied. The Commission's Safety Policy Division was directed to hold a workshop in 2027 on future proposed modifications to the fire-threat map.
The High Fire-Threat District map determines the strength of fire-safety regulations utilities must follow in each area, including inspection, vegetation management and equipment standards. SCE's territory covers large foothill and canyon areas of Southern California, and the decision came in a week when the Norte Fire, Bryson Fire and other blazes were burning across several Southern California counties.
At the same meeting, the Commission approved $1.22 billion in Diablo Canyon extended operations costs for PG&E covering September 2023 through December 2025 under Resolution E-5483, denied SDG&E's proposal to discontinue its regional energy efficiency programs, and denied SoCalGas's request for $24.9 million in additional funding for its customer information system replacement. A proposed agreement for PG&E to energize a new 250-megawatt Google data center load in San Jose was held over to the October 29 meeting.
