San Diego County Jobless Rate Fell to 4.7% in September as Teachers Returned to Work
San Diego County's unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent in September, down from 4.9 percent, according to monthly data released by California labor officials on Friday, October 16. The county figures are part of the state Employment Development Department's regular monthly release on local labor markets.
The San Diego Union-Tribune's reading of the data attributed the improvement largely to the start of the school year: teachers and support staff returned to work, lifting education-related employment and pulling the overall jobless rate down. The picture underneath was mixed, however, with heavy job losses in retail, construction and tourism offsetting part of the education gains.
The figures describe labor conditions during September and were released on the department's regular October schedule. County unemployment rates often move with the school calendar and the end of the summer tourism season; September's reading points to a modest overall improvement in San Diego County's labor market, with sharp differences between sectors.
