Mayor Bass Joins Civil Rights Leaders on Federal Immigration Enforcement, Citing $1.7M Relief and City Property Ordinance
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass joined civil rights and immigrant rights leaders on October 16 to respond to escalated federal immigration enforcement across California. The Mayor's Office said many Los Angeles families are living in fear because of the enforcement actions, and that the city, working with philanthropic and private partners, has mobilized $1.7 million in immediate financial relief.
Bass's Executive Directive 17 set the framework for the city's response, and an ordinance passed by the City Council and signed by the mayor on September 30, 2026 codified its protections into law. The ordinance prohibits the use of city property as staging areas, processing sites or bases for federal immigration enforcement, requires signage at city properties and the securing of nonpublic areas, and increases transparency around contractor data sharing.
The Mayor's Office said residents can access hotline and legal resource information through the Mayor's Office, rapid response networks and community organizations such as CHIRLA. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez was among the local elected officials at the event.
