Follow-Up: Panama Records 746 Aftershocks; First Quake Death Confirmed, Thousands Still Sheltered

Aftershocks continue more than a week after Panama's powerful earthquake of October 9. Local media reported on Friday, cited by Anadolu Agency, that 746 aftershocks have been recorded since the mainshock, as scientists investigate reported changes along the Pacific coast. A day earlier, officials confirmed the first death from the disaster: a 68-year-old woman who died on Wednesday from injuries sustained during the quake.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' weekly update of October 16, citing Panama's National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), the quake affected 13,623 people, and at least 3,696 people remain in shelters a week later, primarily in Mariato, Veraguas, and in Los Santos. More than 4,000 homes were damaged, 879 of them completely destroyed, along with 619 educational centers and 67 health centers. Rain, swollen rivers and landslides are hampering access to cut-off communities.

UNICEF estimates that nearly 38,000 people may need assistance, including about 8,300 children. GSM previously reported the parametric insurance payout triggered by the quake and an early damage tally of 27 injured with more than 200 aftershocks.
