Follow-Up: Macron Condemns Protest Violence and Vows Prosecutions; Two-Thirds of Limoges Town Hall Destroyed; CGT Calls National Strike for Nov. 5

As France's Oct. 17 national protest day turned violent after dark, President Emmanuel Macron posted on X late that night condemning the unrest. He said there is no place for violence in the Republic, and that those who smashed property, attacked prefectures and shops, and looted town halls would be prosecuted and punished; he also expressed the nation's support for the police who safeguarded the right to demonstrate.

The scale of destruction in Limoges, the worst-hit city, became clearer. Prefect Maurice Barate said the roof of the arson-hit town hall had collapsed onto the lower floors, with only the west wing spared, and that roughly two-thirds of the building was destroyed — what he called a "heritage catastrophe." Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the arson; according to reports, more than 15 people were detained locally. Limoges Mayor Guillaume Guérin condemned the arsonists and announced that the city would ensure continuity of public services starting the next day.

Municipal buildings were attacked in several other cities the same day: protesters forced their way into Marseille's city hall, where a bust of Marianne, the symbol of the Republic, was toppled; the town halls of Lille and Angers were also broken into and damaged. The mayor of Saint-Étienne said a protester's hand was torn off by a police grenade there.

On the labor front, the CGT union confederation has called a nationwide strike day for Nov. 5. As GSM reported earlier, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced late that night that 1,200 people had been arrested across France during the day and 150 police officers injured, while organizers put turnout at 550,000.
