'True Detective' Season 5 Officially Casts Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas
HBO officially announced the leads of True Detective Season 5 on October 16: Nicolas Cage will play New York detective Henry Logan and Antonio Banderas will play Rai García, with both actors also serving as executive producers. It is the first time the two have shared top billing. Cage had hinted at joining the series at New York Comic Con last weekend; his deal was finalized this week.
Season 5 moves the anthology to Jamaica Bay, New York, leaving behind the Alaskan setting of Season 4, Night Country. Issa López, who ran Season 4, returns as showrunner, writer, director and executive producer, and has said the new season shares a universe with Night Country and keeps its magical-realist elements. Season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are also among the executive producers. Night Country was the anthology's most-watched season, drawing 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, according to HBO. Production on Season 5 is scheduled to begin in 2027.
