Bend School Shooting Follow-Up: Family Says Wounded Aide Becky Drury's Injuries Are Serious but Not Life-Threatening; 7-Year-Old Remains in Intensive Care
BEND, Ore. — The families of the two people wounded in the October 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend gave updates on Friday. Zack Hall, a spokesman for the family of educational assistant Rebecca “Becky” Drury, 54, told USA Today that her injuries are serious, that she has undergone more surgery, that they are not life-threatening, and that she is communicating with family members. Her husband, Will Drury, said in a statement that the family is focused on her recovery and asked for privacy. According to The Associated Press, her mother-in-law Yvonne Drury posted that Drury was shot through her left arm and right hand, had undergone surgery, and would likely need multiple surgeries. Police said on Thursday that both wounded patients were in critical condition; no new police condition classification was reported at Friday's briefing.
Seven-year-old Saylor Anne Strait remains in intensive care. A statement from Sparrow Clubs, a nonprofit supporting her family, quoted by the New York Post, said she is in critical condition at a hospital in Portland; The Register-Guard reported she was transferred to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland in serious but stable condition. A Sparrow Clubs page said she underwent a second surgery on Friday morning and may need more. Those accounts come from family and support organizations, not from a hospital or police statement.
Four people — three students and a teacher — were killed in the attack. Police say the gunman, 16-year-old John J. Griffin II, fired as many as 15 rounds and carried 44 more.
