West Virginia Announces More Than $1.7 Million to Help People in Recovery Return to Work

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced in Charleston more than $1.7 million in federal funding for two initiatives designed to help West Virginians recovering from substance use disorder find employment, remain in the workforce and build a more secure financial future, according to the governor's office.

The Lauren's Wish CAREERS Program will receive $211,700 in Appalachian Regional Commission funding to serve individuals leaving residential treatment or entering sober living in Monongalia, Marion, Harrison, Preston and Taylor counties, providing career counseling, job readiness training, employment placement assistance, and help with barriers such as transportation, identification documents and work supplies.

A second award of $1.5 million goes to Ascension Recovery Services through the state's Rural Health Transformation Program for a return-to-work program serving Monongalia, Marion, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Raleigh, Wayne and Wyoming counties, working directly with employers to help prevent job loss. Morrisey said recovery also means having the opportunity to rebuild one's life and earn a steady paycheck.

The funding was announced on October 13. "Overcoming addiction is a tremendous accomplishment, but recovery also means having the opportunity to rebuild your life," Morrisey said. "These investments will help more West Virginians get back to work, earn a steady paycheck, and support their families. That's good for our workforce, our communities, and the future of our state." The CAREERS program will also connect participants to education and trade certification programs.
