跟进：警方确认Bend小学枪击4名师生遇难 枪手系16岁少年 另有2人危重

Follow-Up: Police Confirm Three Children and a Teacher Killed in Bend School Shooting; Gunman Was 16, Two Critically Injured

BEND, Ore. — Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed at an evening news conference at City Hall on October 15 that officers found five people dead at the scene of the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting, including the gunman himself. The victims killed were three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. Two more people — a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher — were taken to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries.

The gunman, Krantz said, was a 16-year-old Bend resident armed with a long gun. Police believe he forced his way into the school by shooting at its locked doors. Krantz declined to provide further details about the firearm, and the gunman's name has not been released.

The news conference also settled who stopped the gunman. According to local media accounts of the briefing, police confirmed the gunman was shot and killed by a bystander who intervened. The bystander's name and further details about him have not been made public. On Thursday afternoon, a police spokesperson had said it was not yet clear whether an officer, a bystander or the gunman himself had fired the fatal shot.

Background: the attack began around midday on October 15. Police received a first call at 12:59 p.m. reporting that someone had fired into a car outside the school; multiple 911 calls followed saying the gunman had entered the school and begun shooting. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. and found the gunman already down. Students were evacuated classroom by classroom and bused to Journey Church on South Highway 97 to reunite with their families. GSM previously reported that the Associated Press, citing law enforcement officials, put the death toll at at least five while Bend police had not yet confirmed any number; the official count given at the news conference is five dead at the scene including the gunman, four of them students and a teacher.

Also taking part in the news conference were Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook, Mayor Melanie Kebler and a representative of Gov. Tina Kotek's office. The district announced that all of its schools will remain closed for the rest of the week, with activities and athletics also canceled — expanding its earlier plan to close on Friday, October 16, only. Personnel from the FBI's Portland office are on scene assisting the investigation.

The names of the four victims have not been released, and investigators have announced no motive. The police case number is 2026-00057584. Addressing the victims' families at the news conference, Krantz said: "There are not really any words I can say to any of you that will make this better."
