UCLA's Fall Indigenous Cultures Series: Two Free Fowler Museum Exhibitions Run Into 2027, With Public Programs Through November
LOS ANGELES — UCLA has announced a fall series of events and exhibitions celebrating Indigenous cultures, following Indigenous Peoples Day on October 12 and ahead of Native American Heritage Month in November. Most of the programming is free and open to the public, centered on the Fowler Museum at UCLA.
Two long-running exhibitions are free to visit. "Mountain Spirits: Rice and Indigeneity in the Northern Luzon Highlands, Philippines," on view through January 31, 2027, explores the world of the Ifugao people, who for generations have transformed steep mountainsides into rice terraces that are both feats of engineering and sacred landscapes. "Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art," on view through May 16, 2027, centers on a treasured kaitaka (cloak) in the museum's collection that the Whakatōhea community regards as an ancestor, alongside new works by contemporary Whakatōhea artists drawing on ancestral traditions.
Upcoming public programs include a panel, "Stirring the Pot and the Past: Southeast Asian Food Stories," at the Fowler Museum at 6 p.m. on October 22, with cultural heritage preservation advocate Marlon Martin, UCLA anthropology professor Stephen Acabado and visiting professor Arnoud Arps discussing Filipino and Indonesian food traditions and what they reveal about trade, colonialism and Indigenous histories (free; advance reservations required); a family story time, "Amazonian Myths and Kené," at the Fowler at 2 p.m. on October 25, with storyteller Erick (Ronin) Arias Silvano sharing Amazonian oral traditions in English and Spanish; a free book talk on Kristin Oberiano's "Territorial Discontent" at 11 a.m. on October 29 in A18 Haines Hall; a free artist talk with Shipibo-Konibo artist Olinda Silvano and collaborators at the Fowler at 5:30 p.m. on November 4 (RSVP required); and a "Story Time Around the World" reading of Ifugao tales at the Fowler at 1 p.m. on November 8 (RSVP required).
