Nobody Would Read His Script. Then Robert Pattinson Called: First-Time Screenwriter Ajon Singh's Break
The Hollywood Reporter on October 12 profiled first-time screenwriter Ajon Singh, whose script spent years going unread before landing on the desk of Robert Pattinson. Singh, an Indian American writer in Los Angeles, adapted a 2007 Esquire article about NBC's "To Catch a Predator" and the tragedy at the center of one of its stings.
Director Lance Oppenheim told The Playlist that Pattinson, whom he had met about another project, reached out two weeks later to say he had just received a script — from a first-time screenwriter, Ajon Singh — and that Oppenheim should read it. Oppenheim said the script captured the tension in host Chris Hansen himself, between the man and the meme. Pattinson first attached himself as a producer on the A24 film, "Primetime," before Singh rewrote the lead role for him in five days after a dinner at which the actor kept reciting lines from the script.
"Primetime," Oppenheim's first narrative feature, stars Pattinson as a fictionalized Chris Hansen alongside Skyler Gisondo, Merritt Wever, Phoebe Bridgers and Anna Faris, and opened in U.S. theaters on September 25. Hansen has publicly criticized the film as a work of fiction made without his input — a dispute that has become part of the film's buzz.
