Walk & Roll to School Day Today: Schools Nationwide Walk Together as School-Zone Traffic Advisories Go Out

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 — National Walk & Roll to School Day was held on the morning of Oct. 7 at schools across the country, coordinated by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. Participating schools brought students in together as 'walking school buses' and bike trains, while districts and local police issued school-zone traffic advisories asking drivers to slow down and yield to children at crossings during the morning peak.

The day's organization followed the published playbook: adult leaders walked fixed routes on a timetable, children wore bright or reflective clothing, and student riders wore helmets. The organizer says registration has grown since the event began in 1997, and many schools use the day's photos and step counts in later applications for Safe Routes funding — sidewalks, crossing signals and traffic calming.

For families not in an organized group, the organizer's three suggestions for the day were to leave ten minutes early and walk, to park a block from the school gate and walk the last stretch, and to review the route's hazard points with children after school. Times and meeting points for local events were in each school's notices.

A common practice in Chinese American parent communities is to pool the school walk with Chinese-school and after-school runs: families in the same neighborhood rotate as weekly leaders, spreading the time cost while children build the walking habit within a fixed group. The organizer's templates include a duty roster, an emergency contact card and a bad-weather fallback plan, which neighborhoods can adopt as a set.
