California High-Speed Rail Completes 66th Central Valley Structure, Eighth This Year
SACRAMENTO — The California High-Speed Rail Authority announced on October 7 the completion of the 66th structure on the 119-mile Central Valley construction segment, with the four newest structures all in Kings and Tulare counties. Nearly 90 miles of guideway are now complete, 30 more structures are under construction, and eight structures have been finished this year.
The four new structures are the State Route 43 pergola north of Corcoran (660 feet long, 45 feet wide, 60 feet tall, about 1.5 million pounds of steel and more than 4,200 cubic yards of concrete); the Cross Creek Viaduct (more than 2,500 feet, nearly 11,500 cubic yards of concrete, about 7.7 million pounds of steel and 222 wide-flange girders made locally in Hanford); the Tule River Viaduct (3,573 feet, 38 box girders, about 23.2 million pounds of steel and 264 girders); and the Avenue 136 underpass (55 feet, about 510,000 pounds of rebar and 1,470 cubic yards of concrete).
The Authority estimates the four structures will deliver about $466 million in safety benefits over 30 years — about $137 million in Kings County, preventing an estimated 670 crashes, and about $329 million in Tulare County, preventing an estimated 1,604 crashes. Ed Fenn, the Authority's director of construction, said the figures reflect the project's direct impact on community safety and quality of life. Kings County Supervisor Richard Valle said high-speed rail is bringing safer travel, stronger connectivity and long-term benefits to local communities.
