California Service Corps Swears In Over 10,000 New Members, Passing 50,000 Participants Since 2019

SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom, joined by First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and GO-Serve Director Josh Fryday, on October 7 swore in more than 10,000 members of the 2026-27 California Service Corps across the state. Since Newsom established the program in 2019, more than 50,000 Californians have participated, serving nearly 26 million hours — making it the largest state service program in the nation, bigger than the federal Peace Corps.

The new members will serve in communities statewide in paid roles covering disaster preparedness and recovery — California Volunteers has been directed to prepare to mobilize members ahead of a potentially record-strong El Niño this winter — along with fighting hunger, tutoring and mentoring students, and climate action, earning money while gaining experience that can lead to college and careers.

The Service Corps operates three flagship programs. College Corps partners with colleges and universities so students can earn up to $10,000 toward their education by completing 450 hours of community service, with eligible AB 540 Dreamers able to participate. The California Climate Action Corps, the nation's first state-level climate service corps, places fellows with public agencies, nonprofits, tribal communities and schools on wildfire resilience, urban greening and food recovery. The Youth Service Corps works with cities and community organizations to create paid service and career pathways for young people facing barriers to employment.

The state also launched the California Service Corps Alumni Network to support employment pathways for the more than 50,000 alumni. From 2018-19 through 2024-25, Service Corps members tutored or mentored more than 608,000 students, distributed more than 313 million pounds of food, and provided disaster preparedness, response or recovery services to more than 318,000 people, according to the Governor's Office.
