University of Southampton to Phase Out Turnitin Over AI-Training Licence Concerns
SOUTHAMPTON, Oct. 6 — The University of Southampton is phasing out Turnitin because proposed licence changes could let student submissions be used for AI training, according to Jisc's National Centre for AI September round-up, citing the Daily Echo. The university will not renew beyond 2026-27 while it explores alternatives.
Jisc's round-up notes that who owns student work, and whether it can train AI, is becoming a procurement question as well as an ethics one: the plagiarism checker that students feed their essays into is now the thing universities are worried about. The same round-up highlights a HEPI piece by Dr Chelle Oldham arguing that tougher policing is the wrong response to rising AI misconduct referrals, and that detection tools disproportionately flag neurodivergent, disabled and EAL students.
U.S. institutions are rewriting their rules in parallel: Florida plans to require formal AI policies at public universities, and the University of Texas at Austin now requires an AI statement in every syllabus. Commentators say the emphasis is shifting from policing finished work to assessing visible process, using drafts, checkpoints and oral components.
In the United States, the same debate is under way: several Ivy League institutions now publicly require students to disclose AI use in submitted work. Students and parents can find each school's current AI rules in the academic integrity section of its website — the permitted boundary for the same tool can differ completely between schools, and even between classrooms.
