Fire Prevention Week Day One: Working Smoke Alarms Cut Home Fire Death Risk in Half, Fire Officials Say

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 — National Fire Prevention Week 2026 formally opened on Oct. 4 and runs for a week, according to public campaign materials from the National Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Fire Administration. The lead message from fire officials: working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by about half, and most home fire deaths occur in homes with no alarms or alarms that failed to operate.

The week's second theme is the home escape plan. The USFA advises every household to draw a floor-plan escape map, plan two exits from every room, fix an outdoor meeting point, and make sure everyone — including visiting grandparents — knows the route when an alarm sounds at night. With modern furnishings burning faster, the time from alarm to a smoke-filled room can be about two minutes, which is why the plan must be rehearsed rather than improvised.

The kitchen is the top origin of home fires. Campaign materials remind cooks to stay at the stove, keep a lid within reach to smother a grease fire (never use water), and keep towels, paper and wooden utensils at least 30 centimeters from burners. Many local fire departments hold open houses and free alarm installation sign-ups this week; details are on city fire department websites.

Fire Prevention Week is a publicity and self-check window, not a legal deadline: smoke-alarm duties are set separately by state and landlord-tenant law — California, for instance, requires working alarms in rental units at delivery. Tenants who find alarms missing or dead should notify the landlord in writing, keep a copy, and can consult the fire department's non-emergency line if needed.
