Bought the Recalled Iceberg Lettuce? Consumer Guidance Restated as FDA Closes Cyclospora Probe
WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 — The recall of Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce linked to the largest Cyclospora outbreak on record in the U.S. (12,883 illnesses) remains in effect, according to the FDA's closing file and the CDC's published investigation methods. Households holding product from the implicated lots should not eat it; they should return it under the recall notice for a refund or discard it. The FDA confirmed on Oct. 2 that the parasite was found in wastewater at the company's Mexico plant and in a drainage ditch at a supplying grower.
Many consumers asked why a recall stands if the company says no lettuce tested positive. The CDC's written methodology answers the question: an outbreak link rests on three kinds of evidence — epidemiology, traceback and testing — and a positive food sample is only one of them. When patients' food histories and the supply chain converge on one node, officials can act even with negative product samples. 'Not detected' does not mean 'not linked,' and the recall notice, not company statements, is the document consumers should follow.
Cyclosporiasis typically causes watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and fatigue after an incubation period of about a week, and can relapse for weeks without treatment. Patients should tell their doctor about recent raw lettuce or salad consumption, because the parasite requires specific stool testing that routine examinations may miss.
The recommended order for product already at home: confirm the lot against the recall notice using packaging and receipts, photograph the product as found, then follow the notice to return it for a refund or discard it — do not wait for symptoms before acting. Recalled lettuce should not be eaten even if it looks and smells normal, because Cyclospora contamination cannot be washed off.
