More Homeless People Near My Home — After 26 Years in America, One Corner of the Country I See
Heading out early in the morning, I saw this scene again, right outside a 99-cent store near my home.
On the sidewalk, some people lay wrapped in blankets, and others sat on the ground. An elderly man sat among his blankets and belongings, a few bottles beside him — pretty much everything he had. The sun was already up. Their day was only just beginning.
There are more and more homeless people near my home. Scenes like this have become more and more common in the past few years. When I first came to Los Angeles, the streets did not look like this. Now I come across it just a few steps from home.
I have lived in this city for 26 years. Watching my own neighborhood change like this leaves a heavy feeling, and I am honestly worried — worried about public safety in this city, and about whether ordinary residents like us can still live our days in peace.
What ordinary people like us ask for is really simple: a safe place to live and work. I only hope the government departments in charge can pay more attention to people's livelihoods, pay more attention to safety, and stay closer to ordinary people's lives.
After 26 years in America, this, too, is one angle of the country today.
