National Fire Prevention Week Starts Oct. 4: Smoke Alarms and Home Escape Plans Lead the Official Message
WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 — National Fire Prevention Week 2026 runs Oct. 4-10, following the National Fire Protection Association's Fire Prevention Week framework and the White House's Fire Prevention Week proclamation. The official message centers on two tasks any household can finish the same day: test smoke alarms monthly, and make and practice a home escape plan. Fire statistics point to the same conclusion year after year: a large share of home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. The NFPA recommends alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level, full replacement at ten years, and at least annual checks on battery units. An escape plan should map two ways out of every room and an outdoor meeting point, and be walked through with children.
Three common oversights deserve a household check: cooking smoke is no reason to disable a nearby alarm — hush-feature or photoelectric models are the fix; keep a one-meter clearance around heaters and open flames; and escape routes for elderly family members and children should not depend on climbing through windows.
Fire Prevention Week is among the oldest public-safety observances in the United States, rooted in commemoration of the 1871 Great Chicago Fire anniversary period and established each year by presidential proclamation.
