Amelia Earhart Records Begin Declassification Release: First 4,624 Pages Posted by the National Archives

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) announced in Washington on November 14, 2025, that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard had launched the release of U.S. government records on aviator Amelia Earhart: the first declassified files went online that day on a dedicated National Archives page, with additional records to be declassified, digitized and posted on a rolling basis as agencies identify them. According to the National Archives posting and same-day media reports, the first batch comprises 53 records totaling 4,624 pages.

The release follows President Donald J. Trump's September 26, 2025 directive to declassify and release all government records related to Earhart, her final trip, and everything else about her. Gabbard directed agencies to review and prepare responsive records, which are transferred to the National Archives for digitization and public release as they are declassified.

The records published in the first batch feature reports, maps and messages tracing Earhart's final flight and the initial search in the days after her disappearance, including newly declassified files from the National Security Agency, information on her last known communications and location, weather and plane conditions at the time, potential search locations, and subsequent inquiries and theories. The files are posted on the National Archives site: National Archives Amelia Earhart records page.

Earhart, an American aviation pioneer, became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. On July 2, 1937, she and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the South Pacific in a Lockheed Electra while flying from Lae, Papua New Guinea, to Howland Island on an attempted round-the-world flight. The aircraft was never found, and her disappearance has captivated the public for nearly 90 years.

Announcing the release, Gabbard said that, delivering on President Trump's promise, the release of the Earhart files will shine light on the disappearance of a beloved American aviator who has been at the center of public inquisition for decades, and that the intelligence community will continue working to end the weaponization of intelligence and focus on finding and telling the truth. ODNI called the posting a first step toward making all federal Earhart records available online in one place for the first time. (Source: Office of the Director of National Intelligence)
