Pelicans Cruise Past Spurs 117-99 in Season Opener as Zion Williamson Leads the Starters
The New Orleans Pelicans opened the NBA season with a 117-99 win over the San Antonio Spurs. After re-signing core star Zion Williamson in the offseason, the Pelicans are aiming for the playoffs, and head coach Willie Green started Trey Murphy III, Williamson, rookie Jeremiah Fears, newcomer Dejounte Murray and Yves Missi.
Opening night around the league was star-studded, with the Boston Celtics facing the New York Knicks and the Minnesota Timberwolves meeting the Los Angeles Lakers among the marquee matchups. The Pelicans were ravaged by injuries last season; with a relatively healthy roster this year, the front office hopes to return to the playoffs.
Williamson's health remains the biggest variable in the Pelicans' season, and whether his backcourt pairing with Murray fulfills its promise will be a storyline all year. (GSM, from Indianapolis Star reporting)
