LSU Survey: New Orleans Crime Concern Falls to Historic Low; Only 14% Call Crime City's Top Problem
New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The City of New Orleans said on October 12 that Louisiana State University's 2026 New Orleans Quality of Life Survey shows rising optimism about the city's future and improved perceptions of public safety. For the first time since the survey began 40 years ago, crime is no longer the most frequently cited problem facing the city.
Just 14 percent of residents now identify crime as the city's biggest problem, compared with 27 percent in 2024 and 56 percent in 2022, according to the survey. The city said the survey also found strong approval of Mayor Helena Moreno's leadership.
The independent survey, conducted by LSU, has long tracked residents' views on safety, quality of life and city performance. The city summarized the findings as residents increasingly believing New Orleans is becoming a safer and stronger place to live.
