Rice Study: Houston's Asian Population Reaches 10%, but Political Representation Lags
Houston, in Harris County, Texas, has seen the Asian share of its population climb sharply over four decades. A new Rice University study released on Oct. 19 found that Houston's Asian population grew from roughly 2% of the area's population in 1980 to 10% by 2023, making it one of the city's fastest-growing groups, yet many Asian residents interviewed said that growing presence has not translated into comparable political influence or representation.
The study, conducted by the Houston Population Research Center at Rice's Kinder Institute for Urban Research as part of its Asian American Community Study, analyzed 55 in-depth interviews with Asian residents. Participants said the gap is about more than political interest: language barriers, unfamiliarity with U.S. political processes, experiences with political systems outside the United States and competing work and family priorities all make participation more difficult.
"Asian residents see their contributions to Houston's economic and cultural environment but often feel left out of its political environment," said Dylan Simburger, a research analyst at the center and the report's lead researcher. The study also found that residents want more than more Asian faces in office; they want all elected officials to better represent their communities and take their concerns into account.
The study also recorded signs of change: more Asian Americans are running for office and becoming visible in local politics, particularly in communities such as Sugar Land, and many participants were optimistic that younger generations will become more politically engaged. The researchers say making political processes more accessible and providing election information in Asian languages are key to raising participation.
