Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield Urges Voters to Back Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield urged voters to back Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate, telling reporters on October 22 after a construction tour of an equestrian center on the city's northwest side, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Sheffield had previously appeared at rallies for Democratic candidates, including a unity rally around El-Sayed after the August primary, but had not made a dedicated endorsement appeal to Detroiters as she had done in June at a Detroit senior housing center for gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. Asked specifically whether she supports El-Sayed, she said: "Sounds like that's the winner."
"This election is critical. The future of our neighborhoods, the future of resources coming back to the city depend on this election. So never take it for granted. Get out to vote," Sheffield said, adding that she has endorsed and supports the entire Democratic ticket.
El-Sayed, a former director of the Detroit Health Department, faces former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers on November 3 in one of the most closely watched U.S. Senate races in the country, one that has drawn public attention from President Donald Trump. In the August primary, El-Sayed won 33,825 votes in Detroit against U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens's 61,540, while Rogers received 2,537 Detroit votes. Sheffield took office in January as Detroit's first female mayor.
