DOJ Asks Court to Allow White House to Reinstate Media Ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico
The U.S. Department of Justice filed papers on October 2 asking a federal court in Washington to let the White House reinstate its ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico while the case proceeds. The DOJ argues that access to the White House is “a privilege, not a right,” and says the three outlets' reporting on classified information poses national-security risks.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, already issued a temporary restraining order on September 24 halting the ban; it is expected to expire around October 8. The outlets asked the court on September 28 for longer-term protection, arguing the White House would immediately reinstate a complete ban if allowed. CNN reporters also remain barred from traveling aboard Air Force One.
Trump announced the ban on September 18, citing frustration with “cumulative stories over the last few years” from the three outlets. The outlets have sued, arguing the ban violates their First Amendment and due-process rights, and free-speech advocates warn it could weaken press oversight of the government.
