Trump Pressure Pays Off: Europe Agrees to Release 100 Million Barrels of Diesel Reserves in Four Months
President Trump announced on October 2 that, under his pressure, European allies have agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of strategic diesel reserves over the next four months to ease global energy tightness. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the news after an emergency G7 energy meeting, saying the release will be coordinated with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and participating countries will not restrict the flow of energy and petroleum products among themselves.
According to White House officials, Trump spoke with Macron on the evening of October 1 and sealed the deal with G7 leaders on the morning of the 2nd. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland hold Europe's largest reserves. Since Europe banned Russian energy imports after the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022, its dependence on U.S. fuel has deepened, while the seven-month U.S.-Iran war has further tightened global supply.
The news comes as U.S. gasoline prices retreat from early-September highs. AAA data showed the national average at $4.40 per gallon on the morning of October 2, down more than 9 cents from a week earlier.
