FOX 13 reported that a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck near Gig Harbor, Washington, followed by aftershocks. Seismologist Tobin, quoted in the report, called the 4.2 quake 'definitely a wakeup call.'
The earthquake was below the magnitude 5 threshold for a general cellphone broadcast warning, according to the report. Washington's Great ShakeOut drill is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, with about 1.4 million people in the state registered to participate. Tobin described the drill as a chance to practice responding to an earthquake and said the recent shaking should also serve as a reminder to check emergency kits; the guidance is to drop, cover and hold on, get beneath something sturdy, protect the head and neck, and not run outside.
