图帕克案宣判：前帮派头目杜安·戴维斯被判40年至终身监禁，系此案唯一被定罪者

Tupac Case Sentencing: Ex-Gang Leader Duane 'Keffe D' Davis Gets 40 Years to Life, the Only Person Convicted in the Killing
LAS VEGAS — The 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur reached its sentencing on October 13 in Las Vegas. Clark County Eighth Judicial District Judge Carli Kierny sentenced Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, to 40 years to life in prison: 20 years to life for first-degree murder, plus a consecutive 20 years to life for a deadly-weapon enhancement. A jury had convicted Davis on August 31, after a little more than three hours of deliberations, of one count of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. He is the first and only person charged and convicted in Shakur's death.
Prosecutors did not accuse Davis of pulling the trigger. They said Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, orchestrated the attack as retaliation: on the night of September 7, 1996, Shakur and his entourage had beaten Davis's nephew Orlando Anderson after a boxing match at the MGM Grand. Hours later, riding in a white Cadillac near the Las Vegas Strip, Davis supplied the gun and ordered a back-seat passenger to shoot into the BMW carrying Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight. Knight survived; Shakur, 25 and at the peak of his career, died of his wounds six days later. Prosecutors said Davis is the only one of the four men in the Cadillac still alive.
The case went unsolved for decades, and the trial turned largely on Davis's own words: in recorded police interviews in 2008 and 2009 he described obtaining the gun and handing it to a passenger with instructions on when to fire, and his 2019 co-written memoir "Compton Street Legend" again placed him in the car providing the weapon. Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo asked for the maximum sentence, arguing Davis was the only person trying to profit off the killing. Before imposing sentence, Judge Kierny told Davis that he could not take a man's life and future from his family and walk away from it, saying it took Las Vegas 30 years to deliver justice for what happened on September 7, 1996.
Defense attorney Michael Sanft argued throughout the trial that Davis's confessions were false, criticized the investigation as biased, sloppy and incomplete, and questioned why charges came so many years later. Sanft said he will appeal, and Davis told the court he would appeal as well. Shakur's sister, Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur, and his brother Maurice "Mopreme" Shakur both addressed the court before sentencing, describing the family's lasting trauma and asking for the longest possible term. Davis was indicted and arrested in September 2023; the Associated Press reported that even with credit for time served, he will not be eligible for parole until he is at least 100 years old.
