Ohio Governor Signs Order Granting Fifth Year of Eligibility to 2022 College Athletes

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed an executive order on Oct. 13 granting college athletes from the class of 2022 a fifth year of competition eligibility and barring the state's colleges from enforcing related NCAA restrictions, according to U.S. sports media reports.

The order states that the college careers of that class of athletes were affected by extraordinary circumstances and extends their eligibility window by executive action. It also prohibits Ohio colleges from penalizing athletes who use the additional year.

Eligibility limits for college athletes are set nationally by NCAA rules. In recent years several states have adopted laws and executive measures on athlete rights, drawing attention to how state actions interact with the national association's rules.

The governor's office said the order takes effect immediately and applies to eligible athletes at Ohio colleges, with school athletic departments to adjust rosters accordingly.
