Minnesota Becomes Fifth State to Effectively End Veteran Homelessness
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced Oct. 13 at Veteran Village in Eagan that Minnesota has become the fifth state in the nation to effectively end veteran homelessness.
Figures released by the governor's office show that since 2019 the state has helped more than 5,000 veterans avoid homelessness. The administration directed $47 million to build three Minnesota Veterans Homes now operating in Montevideo, Preston and Bemidji and serving nearly 200 veterans, and, with partner organizations, invested $21 million to buy and rehabilitate 161 permanent supportive housing units for veterans across the state.
Walz made the announcement alongside leaders from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness, saying the milestone reflects years of targeted investment and collaborative, bipartisan work.
The state said it will maintain its housing and support systems so that veteran homelessness remains rare, brief and non-recurring.
