Social Security Benefits to Rise 3.6% in 2027, SSA Announces: About $75 More a Month for the Average Retiree From January
The Social Security Administration announced on October 14 that Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will rise 3.6 percent in 2027 under the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), up from 2.8 percent for 2026. Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the agency will implement the adjustment for 76 million Americans.
The average retired worker's benefit was about $2,087 a month as of August, so the 3.6 percent increase adds roughly $75 a month. About 72 million people receive Social Security benefits and about 7.3 million receive SSI, with some receiving both. The increase takes effect for Social Security benefits in January 2027, while increased SSI payments begin on December 31, 2026. The agency also announced related 2027 changes, including to the taxable wage cap and earnings limits for beneficiaries.
The COLA is calculated from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), comparing the third-quarter average with the same period a year earlier. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the same day that headline CPI rose 3.7 percent year on year in September. AARP chief executive Myechia Minter-Jordan said in a statement that the adjustment is critically important for older Americans, helping millions keep up with rising costs for groceries, routine bills and health care. CNN reported that the 3.6 percent increase is the largest annual adjustment since 2023.
