NFL Suspends 49ers Linebacker Dre Greenlaw One Game for Head-Butting Helmetless Opponent
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was suspended one game by the NFL on October 12 for head-butting a helmetless opponent during Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks — another major penalty handed down by the league this week.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area, the incident occurred in the second quarter of the 49ers' 32-29 win over Seattle. After Greenlaw delivered a slightly late hit on Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, players from both teams scuffled along the sideline. In the melee, Greenlaw head-butted Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet, and was ejected by officials. In its memo, the league determined the act violated its sportsmanship rules.
If the suspension stands, Greenlaw will miss Monday night's home game against the Washington Commanders. According to insider Ian Rapoport, Greenlaw has decided to appeal; the appeal will be decided by a hearing officer jointly appointed by the league and the players' union. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that players 'have to be smarter' when provoked near the opponent's bench. The 49ers are 5-0 and unbeaten to start the season, and losing a starting linebacker is a real test.
