Oklahoma City Council Formally Designates Second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples' Day
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Council has passed a resolution formally designating the second Monday of every October as Indigenous Peoples' Day in the city, celebrating the culture and contributions of Oklahoma's tribal nations. The mayor and all council members voted unanimously.
The push at City Hall stretches back more than a decade and met opposition from some former city leaders, but advocates never gave up. Sarah Adams, a Choctaw Nation citizen who has campaigned for the day since 2015, said: “Our kids will see this, our grandkids will see this. It's a great opportunity to build on something that gets bigger and better every year.”
The city held a series of celebrations on Oct. 12. The Culture Hub in the Capitol Hill district turned its gallery into an Indigenous art show with an opening reception for “Collective Wisdom,” while the First Americans Museum in the southeast part of the city served as celebration headquarters, hosting performances, dancing and singing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and opening a new exhibition, “Oklahoma Tribal Songs by Dawn's Early Light,” honoring the state's 39 federally recognized tribes and their citizens.
