IDC: Nvidia's China AI Chip Share Falls to 34% as Huawei Closes In at 28%
Nvidia's share of China's data-center AI accelerator market fell to 34% in the first half of 2026, according to an IDC report cited by Reuters on October 13. Nvidia shipped about 678,000 AI accelerators in China from January through June, down 44% from a year earlier. Huawei shipped about 572,000 units, up from more than 300,000 a year earlier, for a 28% share, sharply narrowing its gap with Nvidia.
Reuters reported that the shift stems directly from U.S. export controls: Washington has restricted China's access to Nvidia's most advanced AI chips and narrowed the range of products it may sell in China, while Beijing has promoted domestic alternatives and required Chinese companies to obtain approval before importing compliant Nvidia chips. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has repeatedly criticized the export curbs, saying the policy forced a U.S. company to cede China's $50 billion AI chip market to Huawei; the latest data bears out that trend.
Total AI accelerator shipments in China reached 2.008 million units in the first half. GPU shipments fell 26% to 991,000 units, while non-GPU accelerators surpassed GPUs for the first time in history. Beyond Nvidia and Huawei, Alibaba's T-Head held 7%, Cambricon 5%, Baidu's Kunlunxin 4% and Hygon 3%; nine of the 11 Chinese chipmakers tracked by IDC increased shipments year over year. IDC did not specify whether the 34% figure includes top-end chips such as the B200 and B300, which are barred from export to China but have been smuggled into the country, Reuters noted. Nvidia did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
