White House Asks Ambassador to Greece Guilfoyle to Resign, Announced at New Press Secretary's First Briefing
The White House on October 13 asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign. New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced the decision at her first media briefing: “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.”
President Trump told reporters outside the White House on October 12 that he was considering removing Guilfoyle, saying, “We're not happy.” Asked about the matter again on October 13, he said he did not like what he had read. The Wall Street Journal had reported in recent days on alleged misconduct by Guilfoyle: before her Senate confirmation hearing, she asked campaign donor Eric Deters to pay a $100,000 American Express bill and offered to use her connections to the Trump family for his benefit; she was also said to have accepted lavish hospitality from Greek businessmen and to have brought a lobbyist for a Greek construction company into official meetings. Deters called it an obvious pay-to-play arrangement. Guilfoyle's lawyers denied all the allegations, questioned the authenticity of the messages, said the money was payment for speaking engagements and public appearances before her nomination, and said she complied with federal gift-reporting rules. Guilfoyle posted a statement on social media on October 13 calling the allegations false, saying she would vigorously defend her name, and affirming that her loyalty to Trump and the “America First” movement would never end.
Guilfoyle is a former Fox News host, the former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., and the ex-wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom. She became ambassador to Greece in September 2025. Greece is an important U.S. ally in NATO, holds a key position in Eastern Mediterranean security, and leads an EU maritime mission protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
